Ridgemont Highlands’ G1 winning Singspiel horse Potala Palace is the sire of South Africa’s latest turf sensation Katak.

The latter made it four wins from as many outings with a cosy success in the G3 Abe Bloomberg Legal Eagle Stakes (1800m) at Kenilworth on Tuesday.
Katak, who was trying the 1800m trip for the first time, was all the rage for Tuesday’s race for 3yos, and duly jumped as the 5-10 tote favourite.

Positioned just off the early pace by jockey Greg Cheyne, the Highlands bred colt hit the front 200m from home and held off a game late challenge from Super Silvano to score his second consecutive graded win by three parts of a length.

A five and a half length winner of the G3 Kuda Variety Club Mile at his previous start, Katak made it four wins from as many starts by landing Tuesday’s feature race.

Katak is the third graded stakes winner, following Palace Of Dreams (Pretty Polly Stakes) and Singforafa (Strelitzia Stakes), to have emerged from G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Potala Palace (by Singspiel)’s second crop.

From the same family as Sadler’s Wells, Nureyev and Blame, and a half-brother to recently retired G1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas winner Front And Centre, Potala Palace made a big impression with his first crop headed by four black type horses, while his current crop of two-year-olds includes recent debut winner Laetitia’s Angel.
