Equus Champion Soqrat is set to stand at Sandown Stud for R20 000 this year, where he stand alongside inform Irish champion Pathfork.
Trained by Mike de Kock for owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, the handsome Soqrat won or placed in 16 of his 18 starts while earning R3 576 750 in prize money.
Soqrat’s efforts saw him finish in the first three in 10 graded races, with his seven career wins highlighted by victories in all of the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes, G1 Cape Guineas (a race won previously by such outstanding stallions as Captain Al and Jet Master), and G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes.
Ranking among the best of his generation at two, three and four, Soqrat was South Africa’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2017-2018 when his three wins, from four starts, included the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes, where he accounted for the likes of Twist Of Fate and Cirillo.
The colt would go on to add wins in both the G1 Cape Guineas and G1 Horse Chestnut Stakes at three, when Soqrat also finished a close second to subsequent Horse Of The Year Do It Again in the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.
The champion again showed top-class form at four, when Soqrat won the G3 Victory Moon Stakes, and finished second in both the G1 Chris Gerber Summer Cup (where he conceded the winner no less than 8kgs!), and G1 World Sports Betting Premier’s Champions Challenge.
A grandson of Danehill’s hugely successful sire son Commands, Soqrat is out of the dual winning Hussonet mare Elzeeza, herself a daughter of Hawkesbury Guineas up runner up Lunasong.
This is the same family as French classic winner and multiple champion sire Linamix among others, with Soqrat himself tracing back directly in female line to the remarkable Gondolette (ancestress of all of Hyperion, Pharamond, Mossborough and Sir Tristram to name a few!)
Soqrat, who won graded stakes races at two, three and four, will stand for a fee of R20 000 this year after he makes his final start in this year’s G1 Vodacom Durban July.
