Red Ray filly wins Magnolia Handicap

26th Nov 2022

The Vogel Vlei Stud based Red Ray enjoyed a good payday at Turffontein on Saturday when the Red Ray filly Alula’s Star won the G3 Joburg Tourism Magnolia Handicap (1160m), while accounting for a top-class field of fillies and mares.
Trained by Stuart Pettigrew, four-year-old Alula’s Star was sent off a 14-1 shot for Saturday’s R200 000 sprint but made a mockery of her starting price with a convincing win.
Alula’s Star was given a fine ride by the inform Philasande Mxoli, who bought his mount with a sustained late which saw Alula’s Star hit the front 200m from home and win a shade cosily by a neck.
Among those beaten by Alula’s Star on Saturday were the graded stakes winners Gobsmacked, Miss Cool, Sweet Pepper and Supreme Quest.
Winning rider Philsande Mxoli said after the race, “This is a special filly for me. I knew she needed the run last time and I knew she would quicken up this time.”
Bred by Winterbach Stud, Alula’s Star has now won five of 16 starts for earnings of R503 812.
The four-year-old is out of the Captain Al mare Solar Voyager.
Alula’s Star is the second graded stakes winner to emerge from Red Ray’s small first crop, with this crop also including G1 WSB SA Classic winner Red Saxon.
