Second Oaks winner in a week for Duke Of Marmalade

1st Jul 2019

Drakenstein Stud’s red hot sire Duke Of Marmalade was responsible for his second Oaks winner in a week, when his promising daughter Duchess Of Bourbon captured the Listed Winter Oaks at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Seville Orange

Just one week earlier, Seville Orange (like Duchess Of Bourbon a member of Duke Of Marmalade’s impressive first South African crop) had won the G3 Track And Ball Oaks at Scottsville.

Bred by Golden Touch Thoroughbred Services in partnership with Mr Kidd, 3yo Duchess Of Bourbon produced an impressive turn of foot to mow down her rivals and win Saturday’s Winter Oaks by half a length for trainer Justin Snaith and Richard Fourie.

Out of the Spectrum mare Rose Garden, Duchess Of Bourbon (who has won or placed in nine of her 11 starts) was a R600 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

The filly is the 41st stakes winner for Cartier Champion and five time G1 winner Duke Of Marmalade, whose eye catching first South African crop includes G2 KRA Fillies Guineas winner Santa Clara, Cape champion and multiple graded stakes winner Temple Grafin, the aforementioned Seville Orange and Ardmore Jamaica Handicap victress Princess Irene.

Duke Of Marmalade, whose son Celestial Prince ran fourth in Saturday’s G3 Winter Derby, will be represented by both Santa Clara and Temple Grafin in Saturday’s G1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes.

The in-form sire is a half-brother to G1 Investec Derby winner Ruler Of The World -whose first crop daughter Iridessa won Friday’s G1 Juddmonte Pretty Polly Stakes, while another of Duke Of Marmalade’s half-brothers, Norway, ran third in Saturday’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

The son of Danehill has three lots on offer at this week’s KZN Yearling Sale.
