The Vogel Vlei Stud based Red Ray came up with his second first crop winner when his two-year-old son Razor Red made a winning debut on Friday.

Owned and trained by Tara Laing, Razor Red defied his 25-1 starting price with a bold showing in Friday’s WSB, Best Prices First Maiden Juvenile Plate (1000m).
Always up with the pace, Razor Red, under a strong driving ride from Chase Maujean, knuckled down to fight out the finish with more experienced runner Admiral’s Shine. The Laing trained colt showed plenty of courage and resolution by fighting on to score by a head at the first time of asking.
Bred by the Birch Bros, Razor Red is out of the Captain Al mare Osca.
His sire Red Ray was a top-class racehorse, who earned over R2 000 000 during his career, which saw Red Ray down four G1 winners to land the 2016 G1 Mercury Sprint.
Also victorious in the Listed Somerset 1200 (a race won previously by leading sire Gimmethegreenlight) at two, and G3 Cape Classic at three, Red Ray was also runner up in all of the G1 SA Nursery, G1 Golden Horse Sprint and G1 Cape Flying Championship.
Red Ray had earlier made news when his very first runner Global Glory won, at the second time of asking, at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
A son of multiple champion sire Western Winter (also responsible for successful stallion What A Winter), Red Ray has six lots on offer at this year’s KZN Yearling Sale.
