Silvano sophomores shines at Highveld Awards

31st May 2017

The progeny of Maine Chance Farms’ leading sire Silvano were to the fore at last night’s Highveld Awards when a pair of Silvano sired 3yos garnered awards.
His son Al Sahem was named Champion 3YO Colt for the past Highveld Racing Season, while Silvano filly Orchid Island was named Champion 3YO Filly for the same period.

Al Sahem

Bred and raced by Al Adaayit South Africa, Al Sahem won the G1 SA Derby and was runner up in both the G1 SA Classic and G2 Betting World Gauteng Guineas.
He has won three of just five races and has already banked more than R1.9 million.

The Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein bred Orchid Island downed some of South Africa’s top fillies when landing the G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic and was also third in the Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas.

Orchid Island is one of four Silvano fillies set to compete in Saturday’s G1 Woolavington 2000, while her paternal half-brother Al Sahem will line up in the same day’s G1 Daily News 2000.

Orchid Island

Silvano has a bumper crop of three-year-olds this season –to date, the son of Lomitas’ sophomores include no fewer than 13 black type performers. Al Sahem and Orchid Island apart, Silvano’s star 3yos this year include dual Guineas winner Janoobi, G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks winner Wind Chill (also a runner in the Woolavington 2000), and SA Oaks runner up Oriental Oak, yet another Silvano runner in the 2017 Woolavington.

He is the covering sire on 3 lots at the upcoming Mares, Weanlings & Fillies For Stud Select Sale.
