Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding stallion Vercingetorix, South Africa’s Champion Sire for 2024-2025, had another good day at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.
Vercingetorix had a trio of winners on Sunday, and went close to having a four-timer on the day with his daughter Catch A Penny just beaten into second place in the third race.
The Maine Chance resident’s first success on Sunday came when his son Bad Medicine received a great ride from Gavin Lerena to win the fifth race at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.
Lerena made much of the running on board the Alyson Wright trained Bad Medicine. He kept the three-year-old gelding going strongly in the closing stages to take the www.galloptv.co.za C Stakes (2400m) by just over a length.
Bred by Narrow Creek Stud, Bad Medicine races for Laurence and Jarryd Wernars in partnership with the Stonebridge family.
Out of the Indigo Magic mare Redeem My Heart, and bred on the same Vercingetorix/Indigo Magic cross as 2021 G1 Gold Medallion winner Ambiorix, Bad Medicine was a R600 000 buy from the 2023 National Yearling Sale.
His sire struck again when Vercingetorix filly Vision To Achieve won the sixth race on Sunday.
The Paul Gadsby trained four-year-old, under another good ride from Gavin Lerena, made much of the running to win the Tote For The Win Class 4 (F and M) (1000m) by nearly half a length.
Bred by Maine Chance, Vision To Achieve has won three of her last four starts and five times overall.

Vercingetorix’s third and final winner on Sunday came when his Justin Snaith trained daughter Dafnes Daughter won the ninth and last race. Under Gavin Lerena, the Nick Jonsson owned three-year-old pulled away to claim the Hollywoodbets Bright Future Class 4 (F and M) by more than a length and a half.
Bred by Geoff Van Lear, Dafnes Daughter is out of the Var mare Schippers.
The unstoppable Vercingetorix has had a magnificent season in 2024-2025, and has been responsible for 22 stakes winners in South Africa this season.
