Last season’s Champion Sire of 2YOs, Var enjoyed another big weekend with his juvenile runners.
Not only was Var responsible for a pair of impressive 2yo winners in Cape Town, but his sons Heavenly Risk and Dewali both impressed when running third and fourth, respectively, on debut in Saturday’s Listed Storm Bird Stakes at Turffontein.
(Remarkably Var was responsible for five of the 13 runners in the Storm Bird Stakes).
The former star sprinter also enjoyed a two-year-old double at Durbanville on Saturday. Var colt Top Of The Class made a big impression when downing winners, when making a winning debut, in a juvenile plate over 1000m for trainer Vaughan Marshall.
Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, and ridden to victory Avontuur sponsored hoop MJ Byleveld, Top Of The Class is now likely to travel to KZN where he may contest some of the season’s juvenile feature races. Out of the Western Winter mare Academia, and a ¾ brother to Var’s G1 daughter Schiffer, Top Of The Class has a full-brother (Lot 76) on offer at next month’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Var is also sire of smart 2yo filly Carioca, who made it back to back wins when landing a juvenile plate for fillies over 1250m for trainer Joey Ramsden.
Also bred by Avontuur, the consistent Carioca has now won or placed in four of five outings.
Var has now been represented by seven juvenile winners in 2017-2018 and appears on track to defend his Leading Sire of 2YOs crown! To date, Var has been represented more 2yo winners this season than all of What A Winter, Querari, and Gimmethegreenlight.
The G1 winning son of Forest Wildcat has four lots on offer at the 2018 April Yearling Sale and a further 16 yearlings on next month’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
