Talk Of The Town relative lands Golden Slipper

22nd Mar 2025

Exciting filly Marhoona, who hails from the same female line as Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s resident sire Talk Of The Town, provided her stellar female line with yet another boost when she won the G1 TAB Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Out of the Encosta De Lago mare Salma, Marhoona gave trainer Michael Freedman and Victorian jockey Damian Lane their second wins in the Golden Slipper when she won Saturday’s AUS$5 000 000 contest.
A third winner for her sire Snitzel, Marhoona burst from the ruck in the straight, surging to the front and holding off the fast-finishing Wodeton with Tempted in third.

Talk Of The Town’s third dam is the Nijinsky II mare Dancing Show, with the latter also featuring as the fourth dam of Marhoona. The latter is inbred to Dancing Show.
Marhoona’s multiple champion sire Snitzel was sired by legendary Australian sire Redoute’s Choice -whose granddam was Dancing Show. Remarkably, Dancing Show also ranks as the fifth dam of Saturday’s G1 3 Point Motors William Reid Stakes winner Schwarz (who, like Marhoona, is inbred to Dancing Show).
Avontuur’s late, great resident sire Var sired the regally bred Talk Of The Town. The latter made headlines as a broodmare sire in Australia on Saturday when the unbeaten Autumn Glow, out of the Var sired Equus Champion Via Africa, won the Listed Hyland Race Colours Darby Munro Stakes.
A half-sister to G1 ATC Golden Rose winning sire In The Congo, Autumn Glow made it four wins from four starts with her two length win on Saturday.
“I think it’s exciting and we don’t know about her, so we’re still learning about what her best distance is,” said winning trainer Chris Waller after the win.“Her dad (The Autumn Sun) was a champion in my eyes and he got out to 2,000 metres, but she’s got so much speed; she’s out of a champion mare from South Africa who had speed, so we’re going to find a happy spot in between and James will obviously tell us a lot today.”
The $1million G2 Arrowfield Stud Stakes (1200m) at Randwick against the colts could be next for Autumn Glow, winner of both the G3 CMNL Up And Coming Stakes and G2 Darley Tea Rose Stakes.
Her champion dam Via Africa was covered last season by multiple champion sire I Am Invincible.
Winner of three of five starts, Talk Of The Town (whose broodmare sire Street Cry is also the damsire of Saturday’s G1 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas winner Broadsiding) came up with the smart performers Famous Lady, Sakurajima and Miss Lia in his first crop.
