South Africa’s reigning champion sire Gimmethegreenlight came up with his third G1 Daily News 2000 winner when his son Green With Envy won the 2024 Daily News 2000 on Saturday.
Not only did Green With Envy win the Daily News 2000, but another son of Gimmethegreenlight, Barbaresco, ran third.
Green With Envy follows Surcharge (2018) and Got The Greenlight (2020) as Daily News 2000 winners for Gimmethegreenlight.
Winner of the G3 Schweppes Politician Stakes, G1 SplashOut Cape Derby and G2 World Sports Betting Guineas in his last three starts, the Dean Kannemeyer trained Green With Envy was all the rage for Saturday’s R2 000 000 and jumped the 67-100 tote favourite.
Under a cool ride from Craig Zackey, Green With Envy raced at the back of the field for much of Saturday’s race, before being unleashed with a strong run down the outside of the Hollywoodbets Greyville course.
In a thrilling finish, the Khaya Stables bred and owned three-year-old pulled out a bit more to hold off a low-flying Flag Man and win by a head.
Green With Envy, who is out of the Galileo mare Miss Coco, has now won six of ten starts and he has earned R2 968 899 in prize money.
The colt, who is sure to be a very attractive stallion prospect when he retires to stud, is one of ten G1 winners for Gimmethegreenlight, South Africa’s Champion Sire in both 2020-2021 and 2022-2023.
The son of More Than Ready is again heading the South African General Sires List this season, with Gimmethegreenlight runners having already earned more than R22 million in 2023-2024.
