Thursday double for Vercingetorix

21st Mar 2025

Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding stallion Vercingetorix was responsible for a pair of winners at Turffontein on Thursday.
Vercingetorix daughters won the two final races run on the day, with Basked In Glory victorious in the seventh race and Virgin River successful in the eighth.
The Stuart Pettigrew-trained Basked In Glory was given a fine ride by Philasande Mxoli to win the Racing Today FM88 Handicap (1000m).
Keen early on, the three-year-old was given a well-judged ride to get up close home and score by a long neck.
Bred by Maine Chance, the blue-blooded Basked In Glory has won two of just six starts.
The filly, who is out of the Shamardal mare Bold Nimph, is a half-sister to G1 Allan Robertson Championship winner Mighty High and G2 Debutante queen Gobsmacked.
Vercingetorix struck in the very next race when Virgin River captured the Next Turffontein Racemeeting Saturday 22 March MR 80 Handicap (1000m).
The Alec Laird-trained five-year-old made much of the running, under Calvin Habib, to score by a length and a half.
Bred by Limestone Thoroughbred Trust, Virgin River had finished third in her three starts prior to Thursday’s win.
Out of the Qui Danzig mare Snug As A Bug, Virgin River was a R550 000 buy from the 2021 National Yearling Sale.
South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2024-2025, Vercingetorix has some exceptionally well-bred yearlings on offer at the National Yearling Sale. These include yearlings out of G1 winners Bela-Bela, Redberry Lane, River Jetez, She’s A Keeper, Sommerlied, Viva Maria and Zarina.
