Trippi granddaughter lifts Tampa Bay feature

18th December 2018

Drakenstein Stud’s champion sire Trippi continues to make his presence as a broodmare sire, and the son of End Sweep added to his growing number of success as a broodmare sire when his maternal granddaughter Silver Bay won the FTBOA City Of Ocala Florida Sire Stakes on Saturday.

A daughter of Currency Swap, Silver Bay dug down deep to lift the $125 000 race by a neck.

Before the FTBOA City of Ocala FSS, trainer Bill Hickey was excited about the prospect of his 3-year-old filly Silver Bay competing on a sloppy track.

“Bet a gray on a rainy day – it still holds true,” Hickey said after the Florida-bred daughter of Currency Swap-Ginny’s Design and jockey Samy Camacho rallied for a neck victory from Broadway Run in the 7-furlong event. Catoria was third, another neck back, followed by Reagan’s Rose.

“Thank goodness she got a chance to run in the mud,” Hickey said. “She loves to play and splash in the puddles, and you could tell she really liked this track.”

The victory was the third in seven lifetime starts for Silver Bay and her second stakes triumph. She is the 36-year-old Hickey’s lone stakes winner. Silver Bay is owned by the Richlyn Farms enterprise of Richard and Evelyn Pollard.

Silver Bay is out of the winning Trippi mare Ginny’s Design.

Other notable performers out of daughter of Trippi include the graded stakes winners Liam’s Map, Not This Time, Multiplier and Miss Sunset.

Trippi, whose current flagbearers include recent graded stakes winners Chimichuri Run and Love To Boogie, also enjoyed good success in South Africa over the past long weekend when responsible for a trio of winners. (Another son of the champion sire, Twilight Trip, finished second in Sunday’s Zimbabwe Challenge).

His son Friend Of Time shed his maiden when scoring over 1160m at Turffontein on Saturday, while Trippi’s daughter Announcing Rain won for a third time when successful on the same day over 1160 metres.

On Sunday, Trippi’s talented son Tribal Fusion scored for a sixth time, and for a third time in his last four starts, when picking up a pinnacle stakes over 1200m at Greyville on Sunday.
Bred by the Favour Stud, the Shane Humby trained gelding, who has now won or placed in 12 of 15 outings, and has banked nearly R500 000 in stakes.

South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016, Trippi has six lots on the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale including a filly out of G1 Mercury Sprint winner Fly By Night and a full-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Chimichuri Run.
