Drakenstein Stud’s champion sire Trippi made news both as a sire and as a broodmare sire over the past weekend.

Trippi’s 3yo son Trip To Africa made a big impression when winning first time out at Hollywoodbets Greyville over the weekend for trainer Duncan Howells and jockey Anton Marcus.
Victorious in a barrier trial on his only previous outing, the Highlands bred gelding romped home on Sunday to register a fluent 3.2 length win while scoring over 1200 metres.
Very closely related to Trippi’s G1 winning daughter Real Princess, Trip To Africa was a R700 000 buy from the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
His sire Trippi (South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016) also made news in South Africa as a broodmare sire this weekend.
Trippi mare Sapphire Gem is the dam of promising three-year-old King Of Gems, who flew up late to score an eye catching win in the G2 Concorde Cup at Kenilworth on Saturday afternoon.
Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, King Of Gems, who looks a likely classic contender, has now won or placed in five of only seven outings for trainer Brett Crawford.
Trippi is broodmare sire of both the first and third home in Saturday’s Concorde Cup, with third place finisher Macthief a son of Trippi’s daughter Yellow Card.
The sire of more than 150 stakes horses, including eight G1 winners, Trippi also features as the broodmare sire of dual US G1 winner Liam’s Map –who is currently the fourth Leading First Crop Sire in North America by earnings.
