Turf Classic success for Trippi grandson

2nd May 2021

Drakenstein Stud’s champion resident sire Trippi made his presence felt at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
His maternal grandson Liam’s Map (by Unbridled’s Song) is the sire of top four-year-old Colonel Liam, who claimed his second G1 win when dead-heating for first place in Saturday’s G1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes (1800m) on Saturday.

Colonel Liam opened an advantage in the stretch of the 1 1/8-mile turf test for older horses, but Domestic Spending surged in deep stretch as the two hit the wire together. After a wait of several minutes, the stewards revealed that each had earned a dead-heat victory.
Having prevailed by a neck in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes, Colonel Liam found himself in another close finish on Saturday. Colonel Liam, a 4-year-old son of Liam’s Map , edged past early leader Smooth Like Strait in the stretch before Domestic Spending delivered his late rally—sending the Churchill crowd into a frenzy of speculation as they watched each replay on the big board. Ultimately, the finish would be called a dead heat.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Colonel Liam was ridden to victory by Irad Ortiz Jr.

The colt, who is out of the unraced Bernardini mare Amazement, has now won six of just eight starts for earnings of over $1.264 million.

His G1 Woodward Stakes/G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winning sire Liam’s Map is a son of Trippi’s high-class daughter Miss Macy Sue, who won 11 races including the G3 Winning Colors Stakes.

Trippi enjoyed more success as a broodmare sire on Saturday at Turffontein where his maternal granddaughter Sheela maintained her unbeaten record when winning the G2 4Racing SA Nursery over a smart field.

An impressive winner of the Storm Bird Stakes on her only previous start, Sheela is out of the stakes placed Trippi mare Trip To India.
