Vercingetorix makes a splash at April Sale

15th Apr 2018

Maine Chance Farms’ young stallion Vercingetorix made his mark at the recent April Yearling Sale.
The former Equus Champion proved popular with buyers at the sale, with Vercingetorix yearlings fetching up to R500 000.

His top lot, the colt Padre Pio, catalogued as Lot 24, was consigned to the April Sale by Winterbach Stud as agent. Rathmor Stud purchased the colt, who was produced by the winning Jet Master mare Polar Jet.

From the same family as Horse Of The Year Legislate and G1 winner Roxanne, Padre Pio is bred on very similar lines to the Silvano sired April Yearling Sales topper who fetched R700 000.

Vercingetorix’s talented half-sister Trinity House also made waves at last week’s two day auction. The Captain Al mare, whose wins included the G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery and G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes, is the dam of an Elusive Fort filly (Lot 55) who made R450 000 to the bid of prominent owner Ian Longmore.

One of 20 G1 winners sired by reigning South African champion sire Silvano, Vercingetorix was an unbeaten Equus Champion in South Africa, who downed a high-class field to land the 2014 G1 Jebel Hatta.

The handsome bay has 15 yearlings on offer at the upcoming Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, including a half-brother to millionaire Kangaroo Jack (Lot 7), a ¾ brother to Singapore G1 winner Flax (Lot 99), a ¾ sister to champion Hot Ticket (Lot 167), and a colt out of Al Mufti’s G1 Golden Slipper winner Gilded Minaret (Lot 421).
