Drakenstein Stud’s top class young stallion What A Winter had another memorable weekend this week, with his progeny impressing both in the sales ring and on the racetrack.

The four time G1 winner, and triple Equus Champion,  was the Leading Sire by Aggregate at the 2018 April Yearling Sale, which took place at Durbanville racecourse on Thursday and Friday.

What A Winter had 14 yearlings gross R2 445 000, which saw him top the sires standing, ahead of such notable stallions as Silvano, Querari and Captain Al.

Currently South Africa’s Leading Second Crop Sire, What A Winter’s top lots included two colts who made R400 000 apiece.  His son Snow Report (Lot 43) was knocked down to Bass Racing for R4000 000, while another colt by the sire, Ulterior Motive (Lot 63) was sold to Dean Kannemeyer for the same price.

What A Winter was also responsible for a hugely impressive two-year-old winner, in the form of his Drakenstein Stud bred and owned daughter Clouds Unfold.

The latter made it two wins from just three outings when scoring an impressive win for trainer Candice Bass-Robinson at Kenilworth on Saturday. A facile debut winner, Clouds Unfold scored an eye catching win when thrashing her well regarded stable mate Western Angel by 2.75 lengths in a juvenile plate over 1000 metres to stamp herself a potential feature race contender.

Clouds Unfold is, however, but one of a number of exciting two-year-olds representing her outstanding young sire this season. Others include the highly rated Fabian and Kuda Sprint hero Agent Of Fortune.

What A Winter has an outstanding draft on offer at next week’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. His 19 strong draft includes a colt out of multiple stakes winner Adobe Pink (Lot 79), a half-brother to G3 winner Fromafar (Lot 103), a colt out of G3 performer Clarion Call (Lot 117), and a colt out of six time stakes winner Lielums (Lot 466).
