Vercingetorix tops Cape Sale

28th February 2022

Fresh off supplying his fourth G1 winner in the form of Saturday’s G1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby winner Pomp And Power, Maine Chance Farms’ prominent stallion Vercingetorix was again in the news at Sunday’s Cape Yearling Sale.

Not only did the champion son of Silvano sire one of the two R1 000 000 sales-topping colts at Sunday’s auction, Vercingetorix topped the 2022 Cape Yearling Sale’s Leading Sires list.

Vercingetorix had five yearlings on the sale, and all five sold for a gross total of R3 000 000 -with the yearlings averaging an impressive R600 000.

His top priced lot was the unnamed colt (Lot 61), consigned by Millstream Farm, who was knocked down to Pomp And Power’s part-owner Greg Bortz for a joint sales topping amount of R1 000 000.

Sunday’s R1 000 000 buy, a half-brother to 3 winners, is out of the three time winning Al Mufti mare So Impressed, a very close relative of former Cape Guineas winner and multiple champion sire, Captain Al.

Vercingetorix also provided the top-priced filly at Sunday’s sale, with his Varsfontein Stud consigned daughter Golden Sickle (Lot 89) knocked down to Suzette Viljoen for R700 000. A half-sister to 3 winners, including G3 Godolphin Barb Stakes runner up Master Of Illusion, Golden Sickle is out of Listed Laisserfaire Stakes/Lady’s Pendant heroine Victorian Secret -a full-sister to dual G1 winner Snowdance.

The red hot Vercingetorix was also responsible for an unnamed colt (Lot 56) who was knocked down to John Freeman for R800 000 at Sunday’s sale. Consigned to the sale by the La Berg Stud, this colt is out of the twice winning Jet Master mare Shadows In The Sun -a daughter of G1 Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Pacific Blue.

Currently South Africa’s Leading Sire by stakes for 2021-2022, Vercingetorix has already been responsible for eight black type winners this season, with his flagbearers headed by the G1 winners Chansonette and Pomp And Power.
