Varsfontein Stud’s increasingly successful stallion Gimmethegreenlight is rarely out of the spotlight at the moment, and the G1 winning son of More Than Ready was at it again this weekend.

Gimmethegreenlight, South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2015-2016, was responsible for four winners over the past weekend, with his promising 2yo son Emerald Band catching the eye when a close up second in Saturday’s Listed Tattersalls Summer Juvenile Stakes.

The gelded Emerald Band, who had romped home by over four lengths last time out, stamped himself as an exciting future prospect with a runner up finish in the Summer Juvenile Stakes, where he was beaten just 0.2 of a length into second place.

The Lammerskraal Stud bred gelding is one of three juvenile winners, from just four 2yo runners, for Gimmethegreenlight this season thus far.

Saturday also saw the first race on Sun Met day go the way of Gimmethegreenlight, when his Justin Snaith trained son Gimmetherain romped home to shed his maiden by a comfortable one and a half lengths over 1200m.  Ridden to victory by Richard Fourie, the 3yo Klawervlei Stud bred gelding has now won or placed in six of his seven outings to date.

The former L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate also had a quick-fire double on Friday with progeny Green Lantern and Green Ice scoring at Fairview and Greyville respectively. The Alan Greeff trained Green Lantern justified tote favouritism when scoring a facile 1.75 length win over 1400m, and that Varsfontein Stud bred gelding has now won or placed in no fewer than 17 races. His paternal half-sister Green Ice made it win number three when she was victorious at Greyville on Friday night for trainer Alyson Wright and breeders Lammerskraal Stud.

Gimmethegreenlight’s success continued at Greyville on Sunday, when his Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred daughter O’ Keeffe won for the fourth time in six starts. Trained by Andre Nel, the five-year-old mare has now five victories to her name, with O’ Keeffe having won or been second at each of her last six starts.

The red hot Gimmethegreenlight, whose yearlings made up to R650 000 at the recent Cape Premier Yearling Sale, has enjoyed another great run in 2018-2019 thus far, with his stakes winners including Gimme One Night, Stream Ahead, National Park, and Rose In Bloom.

Gimmethegreenlight will be represented by all of National Park, Barahin, Green Haze and Stream Ahead in Saturday’s G2 Gauteng Guineas at Turffontein.
