Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s evergreen stallion Var enjoyed a treble over the past weekend, with his progeny enjoying success both in South Africa and Mauritius.

Var, Champion Sire of 2Yos in South Africa the past two seasons running,  came up with his 11th juvenile winner of 2018-2019 when his well bred son Kalgoorlie got off the mark at Turffontein on Saturday afternoon.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, two-year-old gelding Kalgoorlie made it third time lucky when he bounded clear of his rivals to get off the mark by 2.75 lengths when victorious over 1200m for trainer Johan Janse Van Vuuren and jockey Gavin Lerena.

He was one of two winners, from just threerunners, at Turffontein this past Saturday for Var –whose G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe winning son Purple Diamond made it win number four when victorious over 1200 metres.
Trained by Sean Tarry, and ridden to victory on Saturday by Lyle Hewitson, the Anthony Peter bred Purple Diamond has now earned in excess of R680 000 in prize money!

Var also enjoyed success in Mauritius over the weekend, when his son Rule The Night scored at Champ De Mars on Saturday –while accounting for graded stakes winners The Thinker and Woljayrine among others.

A son of Forest Wildcat, and perennially among South Africa’s Leading Sires, Var has had another tremendous year in 2018-2019 with his star performers including such graded stakes winners as Eden Roc, Vardy, Ghaalla and Schippers.

Var has a single lot on the 2019 National 2YO Sale –a colt (Lot 235) out of the Fort Wood sired G2 winner Magic Smoke.
