Makarios, a three parts-brother to The Alchemy’s exciting young sire Where’s That Tiger (Storm Cat), got off the mark on Sunday when breaking his maiden over 1900m on turf at Gulfstream Park.
A son of triple US champion sire Giant’s Causeway (by Storm Cat), Makarios reluctant to load, but came away well to track from third through a hot :22.49 quarter.
Remaining within striking range down the backside, the chestnut went all in nearing the top of the stretch and burst clear into the lane, never being threatened thereafter in a two-length success.
He is the sixth winner produced by the Mr Prospector mare Blissful, a full-sister to G1 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, whose offspring have earned more than $82 million in stakes.
Fusaichi Pegasus, an increasingly successful broodmare sire whose daughters have produced G1 Golden Slipper hero Capitalist and SA G1 winners Cloth Of Cloud and Silver Mountain, was in the news this weekend as broodmare sire of G1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy (Fastnet Rock).
The classic placed Where’s That Tiger has been represented by just a handful of runners in South Africa thus far, but they include graded winners Supertube and Tiger’s Touch, G1 performer Samurai Blade, ill-fated stakes winner Tiger Quest and impressive recent debut winner Flemington.
His first SA bred yearlings come on sale this year, and the son of Storm Cat has 2 yearlings on sale at the Cape Yearling Sale. They include a half-sister to 4 winners from the family of champion filly Crimplene (Lot 36), and a colt (whose 2yo half-brother won on debut) from the same female line as globetrotting graded winner Nocturnal Affair (Lot 73).
Where’s That Tiger also has 13 lots on the March Yearling Sale, including a filly from the family of Storm Cat line champion Kochka (Lot 101), a filly out of a G3 2yo (Lot 115), a filly out of a ¾ sister to G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner State Factor (Lot 125), and a colt from the family as recent G3 winner Rikitikitana (Lot 239).
