Successful sire Jay Peg has enjoyed a good trot of success with his runners faring well all around the country of late, and the former Equus Champion had a memorable feature race double this past weekend.
Jay Peg sons Victorious Jay and Silicone Valley made it a race to remember for their sire when finishing first and second in Saturday’s Calulo Cape Mile at Kenilworth.
However, it was the Hemel ‘N Aarde bred Victorious Jay who prevailed in 1600m contest, scoring a three parts of a length win, at the expense of paternal half-brother Silicone Valley, for trainer Vaughan Marshall and owners Mr Ragoonath and Ms Ng in Saturday’s R150 000 race.
One of the better three-year-olds around last season when runner up in the G2 Selangor Cup and third in the CTS Million Dollar, Victorious Jay pushed his earnings to over R2.9 million with Saturday’s victory.
He was certainly a wonderful bargain buy –with Victorious Jay costing just R175 000 at the 2014 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Just one day later, another of Jay Peg’s sons was in the winners enclose following the running of a feature race. This time, it was the Lezanne Forbes trained Royal Armour in the spotlight, with the latter scoring in a tight finish to Sunday’s Natal Carbineers/Fever Tree Stakes at Scottsville on Sunday. It was a seventh win for the Waterford Stud bred Royal Armour, who races for Mr and Mrs Pienaar, and the gelding has now banked over R420 000 in prize money.
