13th stakes win for Greys Inn champion

10th December 2018

Rosedene Stud’s resident stallion Greys Inn is the sire of the extraordinary gelding Legal Eagle, who picked up his 15th victory (from 26 outings) when victorious in a thrilling finish to the G2 Green Point Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Legal Eagle

Legal Eagle, who was also collecting a remarkable 12th graded stakes win, dug down deep under regular pilot Anton Marcus to land Saturday’s R400 000 contest by a short head –with less than a neck separating the first horses home.

In the process, the Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm bred champion (who was winning the Green Point for a third year running) accounted for G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge hero Undercover Agent, Equus Champion and Vodacom Durban July winner Do It Again, and the previously unbeaten Rainbow Bridge.

Now unbeaten in two starts this season, the Sean Tarry trained Legal Eagle will now attempt to win the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate for a fourth year in a row when he lines up in that January’s showpiece feature.

Legal Eagle, unbeaten in ten outings over 1600m, was a R425 000 buy from the 2013 National Yearling Sale.

The champion, whose full-sister (Lot 1) is on offer at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, took his earnings to over R11.8 million with his courageous win on Saturday, with Legal Eagle’s previous triumphs including not only a trio of wins in the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, but also three wins in the G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, the 2015 G1 SA Derby and the 201 G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge.

Greys Inn

He is one of a trio of G1 winners sired by Equus Champion and 2004 Vodacom Durban July winner Greys Inn, whose previous top level winners were King Of Pain (G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge) and Royal Bencher (G1 SA Derby).

A son of legendary stallion Zabeel, Greys Inn has five lots on offer at January’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
