Currently South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs, by stakes, for 2020-2021, Varsfontein Stud’s prominent sire Gimmethegreenlight came up with two more two-year-old winners, when two of his daughters won at Durbanville on Wednesday.

The son of More Than Ready has now supplied four two-year-old winners since Saturday.
With Mercury Rising and Warm Welcome both winning yesterday, Gimmethegreenlight’s tally of two-year-old winners this season now stands at 14, with his other notable juveniles of 2020-2021 including graded stakes winners Cosmic Highway and Gimme Dat, as well as impressive debut winners Green Taffety and Gimme A Prince.
Mercury Rising, second on debut, justified tote favouritism when staying on strongly to land Wednesday’s second race, the Tabonline.co.za Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies) over 1000m by three-parts of a length.
Under Richard Fourie, the Justin Snaith trained filly scored a comfortable expense over regally bred first-timer Amanzimtoti with the pair well clear of third place finisher Louis’ Diamond.
Bred by the Cheveley Stud, the two-year-old is out of the Captain Al mare Earth’s Orbit and is bred on the same Gimmethegreenlight/Captain Al cross as G1 winner Gunner.
Justin Snaith, who trained Gimmethegreenlight himself, also sent out the sire’s second two-year-old to win on Wednesday in the form of Warm Welcome. The latter, under Sandile Mbhele, stormed home from off the pace, to land the fourth race by three-parts of a length.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Warm Welcome was making just her second start on Wednesday.
Out of the well performed Fort Wood mare Close The Gap, Warm Welcome is bred on the same cross as graded stakes winners Gee For Go, Green Pepper, Hack Green and Second Base.
