South Africa’s reigning champion sire Gimmethegreenlight came up with his 41st stakes winner when his three-year-old daughter Europeana captured the Listed Breeders Guineas (1600m) at Fairview on Friday.
Under Charles Ndlovu, the Alan Greeff trained filly stayed on too strongly for runner up Zambaq to score by a length, with tote favourite Queen Of Shadows a further length and a quarter away in third spot.
Bred and owned by Alec and Gillian Foster, Europeana has now won two of 13 starts, with the Gimmethegreenlight filly having also finished third in last year’s Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery.
Europeana, who is out of the Red Ransom mare Excelsa, is one of seven stakes winners to have emerged from Gimmethegreenlight’s current crop of three-year-olds. Other notables from this crop include last Saturday’s impressive G2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes winner Cosmic Highway and G3 Cape Racing Politician Stakes victor Universal. The latter went close to enjoying G1 success when he ran a close up second in the recent G1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby and looks a potential July horse in the making.
Gimmethegreenlight, currently second on the South African General Sires List, is set to be represented in Saturday’s G1 WSB SA Classic by his son Outofthedarkness.
