Maine Chance Farms’ prominent sire Vercingetorix made headlines once again on Friday when his daughter Phedra made it five wins in a row with a clear-cut win at Fairview.
Trained by Sharon Kotzen, four-year-old Phedra outclassed some smart rivals when she ran out a facile winner of Friday’s feature race, the Cradock Place Stakes (Non-Black Type) over 1200 metres.
Under a confident Mpumelelo Mjoka, Phedra finished full of running to win going away by a length and three-quarters, with last season’s Listed City Of Cape Town Summer Juvenile Stakes/Listed East Cape Nursery winner Cliff Top comfortably held back in second place.

Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Phedra, who is out of the Trippi mare Pritti, has proved a revelation since relocating to the Eastern Cape, with Friday’s win being the filly’s sixth win from seven local outings.

In total, Phedra has won six of her 18 starts for her connections.

Her G1 Jebel Hatta winning sire Vercingetorix had an outstanding season in 2021-2022 when the champion son of Silvano was responsible for no fewer than 14 stakes winners with those black type winners picking up 21 stakes races in South Africa during the 2021-2022 season.
Runner up on last season’s General Sires List, Vercingetorix is currently third on the same list for the 2022-2023 season.
