1-2 for Var in Laisserfaire Stakes

13th Nov 2017

Last season’s Champion 2YO Sire Var has made a bright start to the 2017-2018 season and the son of Forest Wildcat’s great run of form continued this weekend when Var was represented by a treble of winners.

Var was also responsible for both Sommerlied and Casual Diamond, the first two home in the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes, run over 1100m at Kenilworth on Saturday.

In landing the 2017 Laisserfaire Stakes, Sommerlied became the 39th stakes winner for Var.

Bred and owned by Maine Chance Farms, and trained by Dennis Drier (no stranger to the progeny of Var!), Sommerlied made it win number five from just six starts with a convincing win in Saturday’s R150 000 feature.

Despite conceding 8kgs to the runner up, Sommerlied ran on strongly under jockey Sean Veale to register her first black type win by 0.2 of a length with Casual Diamond game back in second. The Laisserfaire runner up, who has won or placed in six of her seven racetrack appearances, is herself no slouch, having won her last three races on the trot and she could well became yet another stakes winner for her tremendously successful sire.

Purple Diamond

Var looks set to be well represented once again in a Cape feature this weekend. He has no fewer than 3 sons in Saturday’s R2.5 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes, namely Purple Diamond, Virtue, and Strategic Power.

The sire of 20 G1 performers, and counting, Var has six lots on offer at Friday’s CTS Ready To Run Sale.
