Fifth graded win for What A Winter mare

26th April 2026

Drakenstein Stud’s four time G1 winning stallion What A Winter was the toast of Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.
The multiple Equus Champion’s daughter Asiye Phambili picked up her fifth graded stakes win when she won the G3 Dennis Drier Poinsettia Stakes (1200m).

Asiye Phambili had won the same race in 2024, before finishing second in the 2025 Poinsettia Stakes.
The mare had also won this season’s G3 World Sports Betting Southern Cross Stakes, as well as both the 2024 Southern Cross Stakes and 2025 G2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes.

The 2026 Poinsettia Stakes was a resounding triumph for What A Winter, whose daughters Asiye Phambili, Buttercup Baby and Symphony In White finished first, third and fourth respectively.

Under Sean Veale, the Duncan Howells trained Asiye Phambili raced just off the pace early.
The six-year-old hit the front 300m from home, and powered home to win by nearly two and three quarter lengths.

Bred by Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, Asiye Phambili has won ten of 31 starts with the mare beaten just a short-head into second in the 2025 G1 South African Fillies Sprint.
Out of the Rambo Dancer mare Cast A Spell, Asiye Phambili races for Hollywood Racing.

What A Winter had also enjoyed success earlier in the day when his son Amber Alert won the Race Coast-Bright Future For SA Horse Racing Maiden Plate (1000m).
The Michael Miller trained three-year-old was always up with the pace, and the Tristan Godden ridden gelding stayed on well to score by more than two lengths.
Bred by Waterford Stud, Amber Alert races for Sterling Miller and Ben Sahd.
