Varsfontein Stud’s well performed young stallion Erik The Red gained yet another boost to his pedigree page when his close relative Cala Muretta won the G2 World Pool with Gold Circle Debutante at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.
A two-year-old daughter of Erik The Red’s stablemate Gimmethegreenlight, the Harold Crawford/Michelle Rix trained Cala Muretta made it two wins from just five starts with a game win in Sunday’s 1200m feature.
Under a strong ride from Muzi Yeni, Cala Muretta defied her 33-1 starting price when getting up in the shadow of the post to claim the Debutante by a short-head.
In the process, the filly made it back to back wins, with Cala Muretta having broken her maiden last time out.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Cala Muretta is out of the Fort Wood mare Scandola.
The latter, a half-sister to both Erik The Red and G1 Gold Medallion runner up Varallo, won three times and finished third in the Listed Lady’s Pendant. Scandola is also the dam of Cala Muretta’s year-older own-sister Gimmie’s Lassie, who finished third in the recent Listed Olympic Duel Stakes.
This is also the family of Varsfontein’s highly successful sire Master Of My Fate and young Triple Crown winning sire Malmoos among others.
A multiple graded stakes winning son of multiple champion sire Captain Al, Erik The Red won six of ten starts including the 2020 G2 Cape Thoroughbred Sales Cape Merchants and 2020 G2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes.
