Varsfontein Stud’s multiple champion sire Gimmethegreenlight made international headlines on Saturday when his champion daughter Gimme A Nother won the G2 Beverly D Stakes at Colonial Downs.

Newstead Stables’ South African-bred Gimme a Nother wore down the stubborn pacesetter Achieve in the final strides to capture the $500,000 Beverly D.  on Festival of Racing Day Saturday at Colonial Downs, adding another graded stakes triumph to an already distinguished resume.

An unbeaten multiple Group 1 winner in her native country, the Graham Motion trainee earned her third graded stakes victory since joining his barn ahead of the 2025 season. Ridden by John Velazquez, Gimme a Nother covered 1 3/16 miles in 1:54.28, the longest winning distance of her career.

Settled in fourth through the opening stages, Gimme a Nother tracked the pace set by Achieve, who dictated pace through early fractions of :24.77 and :49.34 for a half-mile. Ranging up alongside Somethinabouther entering the stretch, Gimme a Nother gradually wore down the resolute leader, getting her neck in front in the final strides. Achieve was a game second, while Somethinabouther finished third.

“She went 7-for-7 in South Africa before I had her,” Motion said. “It takes a while to adjust when they come over here. I thought at the end of last year she was really coming into herself, but she came up with a little injury and we missed the Breeders’ Cup. Hopefully we’re back on track. She’s a remarkable filly and just the kindest horse around the barn. Hopefully we get her back to the Breeders’ Cup.”

Her multiple champion sire had another fine season in 2025-2026, when Gimmethegreenlight was responsible for seven black type winners and he ended up runner up on the South African General Sires premiership.
