Maine Chance Farms’ boom sire Vercingetorix had a memorable two-year-old double at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Tuesday, with the stallion’s daughter Double Grand Slam and son Gallic Dream winning the first and second races respectively.
The champion son of Silvano went close to recording a treble on Tuesday’s card, with Vercingetorix gelding Superior Leader finishing a close-up third in the seventh and final race at Durbanville.
Fourth on her only previous outing, the Justin Snaith trained Double Grand Slam went one better on Tuesday when she ran out a convincing winner of the Hollywoodbets Durbanville Welcomes You Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies) (1250m).
Under Richard Fourie, Double Grand Slam powered away to score as she liked by four and a half lengths.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Double Grand Slam is out of the Captain Al mare Princess Peach and is thus bred on the same Vercingetorix/Captain Al cross as G1 winner Vernichey, and the smart performers Fearless Warrior and Supreme Warrior.
The filly was an R1 000 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale.
Gallic Dream provided Vercingetorix with a quick double when he claimed Tuesday’s www.caperacing.co.za Maiden Juvenile Plate (1250m) in eye-catching fashion.
Under Sean Veale, the Eric Sands-trained colt flew up from off the pace to win going away by a long neck.
Bred and owned by the Yataghan Syndicate, Gallic Dream was making just his second start with the colt having finished fifth on debut.
Vercingetorix has now been responsible for six two-year-old winners this season including Listed Ruffian Stakes queen Mrs Geriatrix.
The former Equus Champion has more than 30 lots on offer at the 2023 National Yearling Sale including a half-brother (Lot 19) to last weekend’s brilliant G2 Senor Santa Stakes winner Princess Calla, a colt out of G1 SA Oaks winner Pine Princess (Lot 11) and a half-brother to champion All Is Secret and fellow G1 winner The Secret Is Out.
