Legislate colt lands Sophomore Sprint

26th August 2020

Cheveley Stud’s multiple G1 winning sire, and former South African Horse Of The Year, Legislate came up with his first stakes winner when his Collins Stud Farm bred son Speed Machine romped home to land the Listed Sophomore Sprint (1200m) at Kenilworth on Wednesday afternoon.

His sire’s very first winner, the Justin Snaith (who also trained Legislate himself) trained Speed Machine romped home to land his first black type race by two and a quarter lengths.

Out of the Western Winter mare Tamora, Speed Machine was a R90 000 buy from the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

A fourth winner on Wednesday’s card for jockey Grant Van Niekerk, Speed Machine was one of two runners in the 2020 Sophomore Sprint sired by Legislate, with the latter also responsible for Sophomore Sprint fourth place-getter Hoedspruit.

Four time G1 winner, and 1600m course record holder at Kenilworth, Legislate has made a fine start with his small first crop.
To date, the champion son of Dynasty has been responsible for 14 first crop runners -of which 12 have won or finished in the money, with his early winners including impressive debut, and Irridescence Stakes third place-getter, Veronica Mars.

A close relative of exciting three-year-old Lion’s Head, Legislate is a full-brother to recent Jockey Club Stakes winner Statute.
