Million win for Great Britain

4th Jul 2017

Southford Stud stand the blue blooded sire Great Britain, who recently made headlines when his son Al Mariachi landed the KZN Yearling Sale Million at Greyville on Saturday.

Great Britain

Bred by the Riverton Stud, Al Mariachi was always well positioned in Saturday’s R1 000 000 and the Brett Crawford trained colt drew clear, under a confident ride by Corne Orffer, to record a half length win in the R1 000 000 contest, run over 1300m.

Another son of Great Britain, Whorly Whorly, ran fifth in the Million- making it a memorable race indeed for the son of Green Desert.

Now a winner of two of just five starts and with his earnings standing at R763 750, Al Mariachi (a R70 000 buy from the 2016 Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale) had previously run third to the unbeaten Sand And Sea in the G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion.

Great Britain has been represented by five  juvenile winners (including G1 performer Whorly Whorly) this season thus far, with another 2yo by the sire, the Highlands bred Eve Wilkie breaking her maiden by one and a half lengths over 1200m at Fairview on Monday.

Great Britain’s full brother Cape Cross

Eleven of his 18 juvenile starters this season have either won or finished in the money, with Great Britain’s other notable performers this season including the high class fillies Wrecking Ball (G3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap) and Hashtag Strat (Listed Swallow Stakes).

A full-brother to now deceased outstanding sire Cape Cross (responsible for Epsom classic winners Sea The Stars, Ouija Board and Golden Horn), Great Britain’s other notable relatives include red hot sire Iffraaj –sire of 2017 G1 winners Jon Snow, Gingernuts and recent G1 Queen Anne Stakes winner Ribchester.
