Philanthropist relative makes history in New York

13th Aug 2018

A colt from the same family as Drakenstein Stud’s highly successful sire Philanthropist made history when becoming the most expensive yearling ever sold at the New York Bred Yearling Sale over the weekend.

Sired by Pioneerof The Nile, the sales topping colt was knocked down to Shortleaf Stable for $600 000 at Sunday night’s auction.

Catalogued as Lot 588, the record breaking colt is out of the A P Indy mare Score, whose previous foals include G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes third Timely Tally and the ten time stakes placed winner Datt Melody.

Score, in turn, is out of G1 Frizette/G1 Top Flight Handicap winner Educated Risk –a half-sister to Breeders’ Cup winning champion Inside Information and to G2 Demoiselle Stakes second Hidden Reserve (dam of 3 graded stakes winners including Philanthropist).

Philanthropist, whose offspring include Hong Kong star Singapore Sling as well as champions Pender Harbour and Phil’s Dream, enjoyed plenty of success with his 2yos last season.
Promising 2yos representing Philanthropist in 2017-2018 include the smart Heaven’s Reward (a winner of two of her three outings), stakes placed Clifton Crusher (who contested the G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe), G3 Umkhomazi Stakes third Ganesh Talai and G1 contender Vivir.

A son of outstanding sire Kris S, Philanthropist has eight lots on offer at this week’s National Two Year Old Sale –including a colt out of G3 Sycamore Sprint winner Smangaliso (Lot 56), a colt whose dam is a half-sister to European champion Strategic Choice (Lot 71), and a filly out of Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes winner Arria (Lot155).
