Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s leading sire Var has been enjoying his customary good run of success these last few weeks.
The former sprint champion, responsible for the unbeaten 2yo filly Val-La-Ree, had another eye catching debut winner at the Vaal on Tuesday.
This time it was Var’s three-year-old daughter Mademoiselle, who overcame physical odds to reach the racetrack, who scored.
Mademoiselle, trained by Johan Janse Van Vuuren –who also handles Var’s top class granddaughter She’s A Giver, produced a devastating turn of foot to make a winning debut over 1000m. It was a good race for Var, with another daughter, Esstoora, running a close up third.
Out of the Grey Eminence mare Fragrance, Mademoiselle powered home under jockey Weichong Marwing to win first-time out by one and a half lengths.
Her sire Var, South Africa’s Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds last season, has some very smart sophomores representing him this season.
Var three-year-olds in 2017-2018 include the very impressive Talk Of The Town, G1 Gold Medallion runner up Varallo, G2 Golden Horseshoe hero Purple Diamond and speedy filly Casual Diamond.
