Drakenstein Stud’s champion resident sire Trippi had a very smart winner at Turffontein on Saturday, when his top-class son Chimichuri Run showed his class when outclassing a smart field to land a pinnacle stakes over 1160m.
In the process, the strapping entire provided his trainer Sean Tarry with a second winner on the card, with Tarry having also sent out two-year-old filly Social Image to win earlier on the card.
Winner of the 2019 G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint, Chimichuri Run was a strong fancy to win Saturday’s fifth race, the Classic Day 6 March Pinnacle Stakes (1160m) and the chestnut was duly dispatched tote favourite.
Defying 62 kgs, the Drakenstein Stud bred Chimichuri Run, under Gavin Lerena, kept finding more in the closing stages of Saturday’s race to win by half a length.
Confirming himself as an attractive future stud prospect, Chimichuri Run claimed his seventh win, from 30 starts, in a time of 67.12 seconds.
One of 80 stakes winners for Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire Trippi (South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016), Chimichuri Run was a R1 100 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
His sire has enjoyed another superb season in 2020-2021 thus far, with Trippi’s flagbearers this season including G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Jet Dark.
The sire of more than 160 black type horses (and broodmare sire of promising North American stallions Liam’s Map and Not This Time), Trippi has a single lot on the Cape Yearling Sale, and three lots on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
