Former Equus Champion Via Africa, one of eight G1 winners sired by Avontuur’s top stallion Var, made her presence felt on the second day of the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The champion daughter of Var had her first foal, a colt by Redoute’s Choice, fetch $320 000 –or the equivalent of more than R3.1 million, at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Consigned by Newhaven Park (As Agent), the colt, who was catalogued as Lot 268, was sold to Summit Racing Australia.

His dam Via Africa, a full-sister to recent winner Hey Boy, won ten of 16 outings in South Africa and earned in excess of R2.4 million. Trained by Duncan Howells, the Andre Haupfleisch bred and part-owned Via Africa won the G1 South African Fillies Sprint, in both 2013 and 2014, and also captured the 2014 G1 Cape Flying Championship.
In total, Via Africa won or placed in ten graded/listed races, and was twice runner up in the G1 Computaform Sprint.

Her sire Var, South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2YOs the past two seasons in a row, is starting to make his mark as a broodmare sire, with Var mares having already produced the likes of graded stakes winners She’s A Giver and Zen Arcade, Swallow Stakes winner Mambonick and the highly regarded Miss Frankel.

The son of Forest Wildcat is enjoying another good season in 2018-2019, with Var’s latest flagbearers headed by G3 Fillies Mile winner Ghaalla, G3 Epol Magnolia Handicap winner Schippers and Southeaster Sprint king Speedpoint.
